Background and objective: Impairment in communication and social interaction, including the most obvious signs of autism spectrum disorders. Based on importance of these skills, interventions like physical activities were used to help these people. This research was conduct in order to identify the effectiveness of the exercise ball (Jim Ball) on the ability of communication and social interaction in children with autism spectrum disorders.
Methodology: 16 children with autism spectrum disorders with targeted sampling selected and replaced in two groups of 8 subjects randomly. Ball exercise intervention program were used for 24 sessions (8 weeks, 3 sessions per week, each session lasting 35 minutes) in the experimental group. Ability to communicate and interact socially evaluated with by Gilliam Rating Scale - Second Edition (GARS-SE) in the pre and post-test phases.
Results: Co-variance analyses showed significant differences in the scale of social interaction between the two groups (p0.243).
Discussion and conclusion: The results showed that exercise ball can be used as a supplement in conjunction with other treatments to improve social interactions. But the effectiveness of this method among individuals according to characteristics such as level of cognitive function, attention and cooperation is different.
