Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of competitive and non-competitive exercise environments on acquisition and retention of basketball free throws (BFT) in female adolescents with high and low trait anxiety.
Method: In this mesi experimental study, based on the trait anxiety scores 47 adolescent girls were divided into two groups of high and low trait anxiety and according to pre-test scores, were placed into two training groups in a competitive and non-competitive environment. At the determined exercise condition, participants of the experimental groups exercised BFT for 8 sessions. Pre-test, acquisition and retention tests were taken before intervention, during exercise sessions and after the last acquisition session respectively. For analyzing data, One-way ANOVA and repeated measures analysis of variance were used.
Results: Results showed that the performance of the groups in BFT in the acquisition and immediate retention phases were not significantly different, but a significant between group difference was found in the delayed retention test. The results showed that training in a competitive environment led to better performance in participants with high and low trait anxiety. In Performing BFT, the competitive environment interacted preferably with low trait anxiety and then with high trait anxiety.
Conclusion: Participants' performance was affected by the training environment, not the level of trait anxiety, so that participants with low and high trait anxiety performed BFT better in a competitive training environment.
