Psychometric properties of the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) among Athletes: The Persian Version

Abstract

Purpose: The objective of the present study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire in athletes.
Methods: This study falls within the category of non-experimental research and specifically focuses on instrument validation. Data was collected cross-sectionally from a sample of 260 athletes in the city of Yazd. A subset of 45 individuals was selected for a test-retest method to evaluate reliability. Construct validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis based on structural equation modeling, internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and temporal stability was evaluated through a test-retest method with a two-week interval. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 18 and LISREL software.
Results: Confirmatory factor analysis in LISREL software confirmed the two-factor structure of the Persian version of the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire, which includes reappraisal and suppression. The results of Cronbach's alpha and test-retest reliability provided evidence of the internal consistency of the Persian version of the questionnaire (P<0.001).
Conclusion: In conclusion, the findings suggest that the Persian version of the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire meets the necessary criteria and can effectively be used to assess emotional regulation strategies in athletes, offering valuable insights into athletes' emotional well-being.
