Psychometric properties of the item-10 version of Mental Toughness Questionnaire

Abstract

Purpose: Mental toughness, as a psychological characteristic, indicates a person's ability to deal with pressures, obstacles and endure failures. This feature includes elements such as psychological flexibility, commitment, refocusing, self-confidence, challenge and optimism, as well as the ability to copping. The purpose of the present study was to determine the validity and reliability of the 10-question version of the mental toughness questionnaire.

Methods: The nature of the present research was survey research type. The statistical population included all male and female athletes over the age 18 in Tehran province, among whom 151 athletes were selected by cluster random sampling and the Persian version and 10 questions of the mental toughness questionnaire, which was taken from the long version of MTQ48. They completed the in order to examine constract validity from the point of view of specialists and in order to examine internal reliability, Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used, and in order to examine construct validity, confirmatory factor analysis was used.

Results: In addition to confirming the face validity and accuracy of the translation by the relevant specialists, the validity results of the factor structure showed that the CFI and GFI index were 0.99 and 0.96, respectively, and the RMSEA index was 0.038 and the internal consistency of the entire questionnaire and all its subscales was more than 80 percent.

Conclusion: Overall, the results showed that the Item-10 mental toughness questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool and its use can be evaluated in order to measure mental toughness in Iran.
