Predicting of satisfaction with life based on mental toughness and competitive motivational styles in martial artists

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of mental toughness and competitive motivational styles in predicting of Satisfaction with Life in Tehran Martial Artists. Methods: This study was a descriptive-correlational study and its statistical population was all male and female of martial artists in Tehran. Survey data were collected from 190 martial artists with a mean age of 25.02. The instruments used in this study were Mental Toughness in Sport Questionnaire-50 (MTSQ), Competitive Motivational Styles Questionnaire (CMSQ), and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). Exploratory factor analysis was used to validate the questionnaires. Results: The results Pearson correlation showed that there are the positive and significant relationship between mental toughness and its components, competitive motivational styles and Development-Focused and win-fixated components with life satisfaction. The results of regression analysis indicate that mental toughness and components of tough values, tough skills and tough emotions, competitive motivation styles, and Development-Focused and win-fixated components are the appropriate predictors of life satisfaction. Conclusion: As a result, to increase the life satisfaction of martial artists, training strategies based on increasing mental toughness and promoting of the positive dimensions of competitive motivational styles can be suggested.
