Abstract
Purpose: At the highest level of competition, when athletes have almost the same technical level, athletes with better psychological characteristics can distinguish themselves from other athletes. In this research, we studied the personality traits and mental skills in bodybuilding, weightlifting and football athletes in the form of a descriptive, comparative and cross-sectional study.
Methods: The statistical population of the research is male football players(86 people) and weightlifters(79 people) and male athletes participating in national championship competitions in the field of bodybuilding(74 people). The age range of athletes was 18 to 37 years. To measure personality traits, the five-factorNEO questionnaire was used, and to measure psychological skills, the EMS-3 questionnaire was used.
Results: The results of one-way analysis of variance showed that the athletes of three disciplines are different in mental skills(F=19.868) and personality traits(F=14.488). The correlation between personality traits and mental skills in soccer players(DF=0.182), weightlifters(DF=0.41) and bodybuilding athletes(DF=0.409) is significant. Also, the used model showed that the mental skills of athletes are well explained by personality traits(F=98.18).
Conclusion: Personality traits and mental skills are closely related and specific personality traits can predict the level of mental skills. Explaining this relationship using the model used in the present study can help sports psychologists to facilitate the provision of better services
