Abstract

Aim: The purpose of the present research was to comparing body image, self-esteem and gender roles in the bodybuilder anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) users and nonuser at east Tehran.
Method: The study was a causal-comparative (ex-post facto) research. Samples of 150 athletes (mean age 27± 8/9 and Sport experience 11± 5/5) from the gyms in east Tehran were randomly selected from the statistical population of all bodybuilding athletes in east Tehran in 2015 by cluster sampling method. The instruments used in this study were: The physical self-description questionnaire (PSQD), Rosenberg self-esteem scale (SES), Bem sex role inventory (BSRI) and Demographical questioners that completed by two group of (AAS) user and non-user athletes at gym.to analyze the data Descriptive statistics and, multi-variable analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used in Spss 20.
Result: The results indicate that there is a significant difference between AAS user and non-user athletes in body image and its three subscales (athletic qualification, physical appearance, total body self-concept) and male gender role (p; but, there was not any significant difference in self-esteem between two group.Conclusion: According to attending to change the athlete’s conception of body image factors and also gender roles, in order to prevent from using (AAS) seems to be essential.
