Purpose: Assessing the psychological safety inventory of elite athletes in sports environments is crucial. This study aimed to psychometrically analyze the Persian version of the Sports Psychological Safety Inventory (SPSI).
Methods: The questionnaire was translated into Persian. Subsequently, 220 athletes (112 men and 108 women, average age 20±30) with varying skill levels (recreational, club, national, and international) from 11 team and individual sports participated. The Sports Psychological Safety Inventory (SPSI) consists of three subscales: mentally health environment, mental health literacy, and low self-stigma. Concurrent validity was assessed using the sports competition rumination scale and the worry questionnaire.
Results: Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated good factor validity, revealing three factors: mentally health environment, mental health literacy, and low self-stigma. Combined reliability and internal consistency tests indicated sufficient reliability for all questionnaire subscales, with values exceeding 0.7. The correlation between the total score of the sports psychological safety inventory (SPSI) and its components ranged from 0.826 to 0.871 (p<0.001). The correlation between the total score of the sports psychological safety inventory (SPSI) and worry questionnaire was -0.784, and with sports competition rumination scale was -0.685.
Conclusion: The Persian version of the sports psychological safety inventory (SPSI) can serve as a valuable tool for assessing the psychological safety in sports environments.
