Purpose: With limited research on the construction and standardization of a tool to measure athletes' engagement in sports training, the present study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Engagement in Athletic Training Scale.
Methods: This research falls under non-experimental studies and belongs to the category of tool validation research. Information was collected cross-sectionally to establish the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the scale. A sample of 250 athletes was selected for this purpose. Additionally, 40 individuals were chosen to determine reliability using the test-retest method. Confirmatory factor analysis based on a structural equation model was utilized to assess structural validity, Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to determine internal consistency, and test-retest reliability over a two-week interval was used to assess temporal stability. Statistical calculations were conducted using SPSS version 19 and Smart PLS-4 software.
Results: The results of confirmatory factor analysis in Smart PLS software supported a four-factor structure of the scale, which included behavioral engagement, cognitive engagement, positive emotional engagement, and negative emotional engagement. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.89 for behavioral engagement, 0.88 for cognitive engagement, 0.81 for positive emotional engagement, and 0.80 for negative emotional engagement. Goodness-of-fit indices such as RMSEA (0.61), NFI (0.89), CFI (0.94), GFI (0.90), and SRMR (0.054) supported the proposed model.
Conclusion: Coaches can utilize this scale to measure athletes' engagement in sports training, providing them with valuable insight into the quality of training programs.
