Objective: The purpose of this research was to pinpoint the psychological and environmental factors that impact the success of elite youth football academy players.
Methods: To accomplish this, 20 young football players at foundational levels were chosen as participants in this qualitative study. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with coaches, and then meticulously analyzed using qualitative content analysis.
Results: The results of this study were categorized into two sections: psychological factors and environmental factors. In the psychological factors section, four main themes emerged: (1) self-confidence, (2) fear of failure, (3) perfectionism, and (4) visualization. Within the environmental factors section, three main themes were identified: (1) lifestyle, (2) interpersonal relationships, and (3) environmental pressure.
Conclusion: Recognizing the psychological and environmental elements that impact athletic success allows athletes to identify effective psychological traits and work towards enhancing their performance. Moreover, establishing a strong foundation for the development of elite athletes, as well as the advancement of professional sports in any nation, is essential. Therefore, comprehending the policies, programs, structures, and processes of professional sports and taking necessary steps to reach high objectives and partake in international sports competitions is crucial.
